Great Prizes For Your Halloween Games
What's a game without a winner, and around the holidays, what's a winner without a prize? If you're going to plan Halloween games for your children, having some great prizes for the winner (and for all participants) can make them even more fun. Here are some ideas for awards:
Small Halloween Pumpkins Filled with Candy: Many children like to carry large plastic Halloween pumpkins when they go trick-or-treating. You can also find very small versions of these, which can be awesome for prizes to Halloween games. Fill them with candy or other Halloween items.
Stickers: Kids - both boys and girls - love Halloween stickers. These can be used to personalized school items like folders and notebooks, and you'll probably find them on your child's faces and hands as well. You can find Halloween stickers in many designs, and most are fairly inexpensive.
Candy Corn Filled Gloves: Find clear, plastic gloves and fill them with candy corn or, for a healthier option, popcorn. These have the "creepy" look you need for Halloween but kids absolutely love them!
Candied Applies: If you want to make sure that everyone gets a prize for participating, try starting a production line for candied apples. Allow the winner of the game to go first and have the kids line up to roll their applies in caramel and peanuts, small chocolate chips, or color coated candies. Everyone can make their own just they way they like it!
Plastic Bugs: Halloween is all about crawly, slimy things, so plastic bugs make great options. You can find these for relatively little money in just about any toy store, and most dollar stores also carry them in packs. Hide the bugs like you would hide Easter eggs and let the kids keep whichever ones they find. Just be prepared in case you find the lost ones under your pillow or between the seat cushions.
Coupon prizes: If you're playing Halloween games with just your children, you can give out coupons as prizes. Make them for things one day without having to make your bed or one free toy the next time you're at the mall. Kids love not having to do their chores, and these are prizes you can make pretty easily without much planning.
Hours of TV or Computer Time: If your kids fight over what to what on television or who gets to use the computer first, let them play a game with the winner being allowed to choose the program or use the computer first. And what games can you play? There are tons from which to choose! If you want a more traditional game, choose bobbing for apples, but you can also pin the nose on the Jack-o-Lantern, race to "mummify" one another with toilet paper, and use magnets and paper clips to "fish" for prizes. The bottom line? Have fun with it! Join in some of the fun by getting involved yourself. Halloween games - especially if there are some prizes involved - can be great for the whole family.

Behind the Burner Shakes up Halloween Cocktails on WNBC
Divya Gugnani shakes up some scary sippers with Tracie Strahan at Weekend Today. Get yourself in the mood for some haunting, yet delicious, cider based cocktails. The Spiced Caramel Apple (Created by Kara Newman, author of Spice & Ice, as reviewed on Behind the Burner) 2oz Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur 1oz Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Vodka 2 1/2 oz Apple Cider 1 dash lemon juice Rim your martini glass with agave syrup and crumbled gingersnap cookies. Add liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into martini glass. Skulled Holiday Cider 1 1/2 oz Crystal Head Vodka 1/2 oz. vanilla liqueur 1 oz. apple cider dash of angostura bitters Top with Ginger Ale Add all ingredients to a highball glass filled with ice in the order given. Give a quick stir and add the garnish. Garnish: an apple slice on the rim or inside of the glass From the Stone Rose Lounge: Sparkling Venom 1 1/2oz spiced rum 1 1/2oz apple cider Simple syrup Ground cinnamon 1oz champagne In shaker, combine spiced rum, apple cider, small splash simple syrup and a pinch of cinnamon. Add ice and shake. Strain in to champagne glass and top with champagne.

Lemony Jello - Simple Cheesecake Recipe
Cheesecake is a delicious dessert and thanks to jello, simple to make. Many times there is a word or phrase used in the ingredients or directions that is unfamiliar. When it is looked up, the description is often a surprise. We learn something to share with others, and make our recipes turn out better.
Desiccated coconut is one of those terms. The coconut is shredded and flaked. Next, as much moisture as possible is removed. Sometimes the coconut is taken past flakes, to a powdery substance. There is unsweetened and sweetened desiccated coconut.
When you find a recipe that uses desiccated coconut, look to see if it specifies sweetened or unsweetened. It is important to keep the balance of flavor in your recipe. Too much or too little sugary additives can throw the taste off. If the recipe does not indicate what is needed, take a look at the other ingredients. If there are a lot of sugary tastes in other ingredients, select the unsweetened variety. When it looks like the coconut is the only source of sweetening, use the sweetened type.
Desiccated coconut swells somewhat when it comes in contact with moisture. It needs to be stored in a tightly-sealed container, away from humidity. When used in a recipe, it will swell. Coconut flakes and shreds will get larger when put in brownie, cookie, or cake batter. If the powdered type is used, there is less increase in size.
If the recipe calls for desiccated coconut, but you are unable to find it, use sweetened or unsweetened dried coconut, according to what is called for in the recipe. Dried coconut has higher moisture content. Measure out a little less than the amount in the recipe. For instance, remove a tablespoon of flaked coconut from the cup requested when measuring. That should account for the moisture already in the dried coconut.
Simple Lemony Jello Cheesecake
Like most cheesecake recipes, this one uses a springform pan. Family and visitors will be impressed with the lovely dessert you have prepared.
What You Need:
1 1/2 cups coconut cookies, crushed 1/2 cup unsweetened desiccated coconut 1/2 cup melted butter 1 package lemon jello 1/2 cup lemon juice 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup boiling water 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup softened cream cheese
How To Make It:
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the crushed cookies, melted butter, and coconut. Put it in a 9 inch springboard pan. Press on the bottom and sides. Chill.
Put the lemon jello into a large mixing bowl. Add the boiling water and stir, dissolving jello crystals. Add the lemon juice and rind, mixing well. Cool.
In a medium mixing bowl, beat the vanilla and condensed milk until thick.
Combine the softened cream cheese and condensed milk mixture with the jello mixture. Thoroughly blend the ingredients, and pour them into the prepared crust. Chill until firm (about 4 hours).
Sprinkle lemon rind across the top for garnish, if desired.
Serves 8
This is a kid-friendly recipe. An older child or adult should handle the boiling water part. Kids will particularly enjoy pressing the cookie mixture in the springboard pan. Everyone will enjoy eating the finished recipe.

Toaster Oven Caramel Baked Apples Recipe - An Old Favorite
Not everyone knows that toaster oven can actually be used to prepare old favorite desserts like baked apples. This toaster oven Caramel Baked Apples recipe here will teach you how toss in a few apples into your toaster oven and come up with a sweet dessert.
Ingredients for this Caramel Baked Apples recipe:
6 to 8 oz. (about 8 pcs.) baking apples
1 cup sugar
1 tbsp. sugar
1/2 cup water
2 cups heavy cream
Directions for this Caramel Baked Apples recipe
In a deep-bottomed pot, combine ½ cup water and 1 cup sugar. Set over high heat and let it boil for about eight to ten minutes. To spread the color, swirl the pan. Do not stir or shake. Remove from the heat once the caramelized sugar turns dark caramel in shade.
Stir in 2 cups heavy cream with long wire whisk as the caramel mixture bubbles up. Mix thoroughly. Once the cream completely mixes with the caramel, bring to a boil while whisking. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
For this toaster oven Caramel Baked Apples recipe, reheat toaster oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Peel the apples then remove the core. On a work surface, trim the top and bottom parts of the apples, just enough to allow them to balance on either side. Arrange apples In a roasting pan, casserole or baking dish. Allow 1-inch distance between each apple. Pour the caramel and cream sauce over the trimmed apples and seal the container with foil. Bake for 20 minutes.
Remove apples from the toaster oven after 20 minutes, turn them over and bake for another 20 minutes. Turn them over a second time and bake for another 10 minutes.
Transfer apples in a serving bowl. Meanwhile, simmer the sauce over medium heat and let it evaporate to its original consistency. Pour over apples and serve.
